Vejer
The
municipality of Vejer has an area of
264 Km2 and sits at an altitude of 201 metres above
sea level.
It is a beautiful white-washed village on the banks
of the Barbate River and well connected to coastal towns
via the N-340 motorway.
Vejer offers a complete tourism package combining cultural
pursuits, excursions into the interior, as well as some
of the best beaches in Spain just 15 minutes away.
Steeped in Arab traditions, Vejer is famous for its
honey and traditional clay water jugs.
Enjoy cultural tourism walking through
the streets, of obvious Moorish inspiration, from which
the cobijadas can be seen. Discover it´s rich
enviroment and landscapes, get to know one of the last
unexploited beaches, El Palmar.
We also invite you to mingle with its people, to know
the celebrations, to enjoy the folklore, the sports,
the cultural offer... of an open and friendly village
that will make you feel at home. You can also try our
gastronomy through the wide offer of restaurants, inns
and country inns where the best poducts of our country

STAYING
IN VEJER
The town of Vejer is fully provided with
everything you may need during your stay.
It is recommended however that you bring comfortable
walking shoes and clothing. Those who love the beach
or water sports may wish to bring scuba equipment, fishing
gear or even a surfboard for the waves at Palmar.
For food, Vejer has a good daily market and various
fully-stocked supermarkets with an excellent range of
fresh fish, meat, fruit and vegetables. There are a
number of “deli” shops as well as a wide range of bars
and restaurants.
Chemists, bookshops, and a medical centre can provide
you with anything else you may need and there is a hospital
half an hour away in Puerto Real.
A car is indispensable to enjoy all that Vejer and its

FESTIVALS
Carnival (beginning of February)
Increasing popular celebration is held in the purest
“Gaditano” spirit, with shows and masquerades. A week
before the parade the “Tortillá” is held when a giant
Spanish omelette is shared by everyone.
Holy Week (end of March) This is an
intimate and sombre celebration held within the unique
narrow streets of Vejer. Two brotherhoods hold this
celebration: Nuestro Padre Jesús el Nazareno on Holy
Thursday and Santo Entierro on Good Friday.
El
Toro Embolao (Easter Sunday)
For this celebration two bulls are turned loose to run
the streets from the Plazuela to the Avda. San Miguel.
Spring Festival (End of April) Horse
and Cattle market.
Romería al Santuario de Ntra.Señora de la Oliva
(May the 7th)
Grand religious festival. Every year the people of Vejer
and the devout from the neighbouring towns make their
way to the Hermitage and enjoy a day in the country.
Candelá de San Juan
Elaborate effigies of straw are burned with an award
given for the best.
Velada de la Oliva (10th of august)
The image if the Patroness of Vejer arrives on the 10th
of August and it is taken to the Santuario on the 24th.
The festival of the Patroness takes place with a procession
through the streets of Vejer on the 15th of August.
