essential visits - Visit Vejer
1.
The streets of Vejer

One of the greatest pleasures is simply strolling through
Vejer. The narrow winding streets evoke the history
and romance of the Arab origins of the town.
The old walled city is the most attractive part of the
Vejer, with its narrow streets of white-washed houses
and charming and colourful patios full of flowers.
Don’t miss the typical architecture of Vejer and the
small palaces and churches dotted throughout the town.
2.
Panoramical views
Vejer
is perched on a hill at 200 metres above sea, originally
chosen as an excellent defensive position. This means
that the town is constructed over many levels and steep
climbs are sometimes inevitable for the visitor.
This position also gives Vejer a number of places to
enjoy panoramic views of the plains beyond the town
and also of the town itself and its incomparable white-washed
buildings.
3.
Los Molinos
The
wind mills of San Miguel are a magnificent example of
this type of traditional construction due to their beauty
and conservation.
They are located at the highest point of the town.
4.
El Palmar beach
Possibly
one of the best beaches in Andalucia.
Clean, safe and wide without any of the mass tourism
of other areas, this beach is perfect for children because
of its shallow waters and lack of currents. It is also
ideal for sports such as surfing and jogging.
5. Festivals of Vejer
The
festivals of Vejer are an ideal occasion to take the
pulse of the vibrant cultural life of this Gaditano
town.
There are numerous cultural celebrations held throughout
the year culminating in August with the Virgen de la
Oliva. Click here for a detailed
calendar of events.
6. Natural parks
The
area of Vejer is blessed with a number of beautiful
natural parks offering enormous possibilities for those
looking for more active vacation experience.
The park of La Breña and the marshes of the Barbate
River, within the municipality of Vejer, represent an
ecological treasure of pine forests, dramatic cliffs
and one of the few protected coastal areas in the Peninsula.
From Vejer you can walk the various routes through
pine forests from the town itself. Particularly worthwhile
is the trail leading to the historic Ermita de San Ambrosio,
dating from the Visigoth era, located at the foot of
San Ambrosio.
The natural park of Los Alcornocales is one of the
largest in Europe and contains the most important cork
forests in Europe.

Montenmedio
Dehesa
Montenmedio is a complex that is quite unique in Andalucia.
It is not a tourist resort or even just a golf course
but an old finca which has been converted without the
usual housing and hotels into a centre for modern country
pursuits. On the one hand there is a golf course considered
by some experts to be amongst the finest in Europe and
on the other hand there is a huge equestrian centre
capable of housing thousands of horses.
There is also a country trail where visitors are taken
by pony trap to see the local wildlife, deer, boar and
various species of birds. In simple terms there is something
for all the family. Wherever you look nature has been
respected and you can breathe the countryside whilst
looking at the spectacular views of the white villages,
Cadiz, the Straits of Gibraltar and Africa.
